"The brain is wider than the sky,
For put them side by side,
The one the other will include,
With ease, and you beside..."
"I dwell in possibility,
A fairer house than Prose,
More numerous of windows,
Superior of Doors...",
"The souls unto itself,
Is an imperial friend,
Or the most agonizing spy,
An enemy could send...".
Below her printed name read the words:
"Chose to remain isolated from the world in her later,
productive years. A well educated member of an extremely
literate family, she published only seven poems during her
lifetime. However, 1,775 more poems were discovered after
her death and she is considered a founder of modern
American poetry."
Back:
Gentle flowers and abstract borders mark off these words:
"I taste a liquor never brewed,
From tankards scooped in pearl,
Not all the vats upon the Rhine,
Yield such an alcohol!
Inebriate of air am I,
And debauchee of dew,
Reeling, through endless summer days,
From inns of molten blue.
When landlords turn the drunken bee,
Out of the foxglove's door,
When butterflies renounce their dams,
I shall but drink the more.
Till seraphs swing their snowy hats,
And saints to windows run,
To see the little tippler,
Leaning against the sun."
and,
"This is my letter to the world,
That never wrote to me,
The simple news that Nature told,
With tender majesty.
Her message is committed,
To hands I cannot see;
For love of her, sweet countrymen,
Judge tenderly of me."
