Charles Dickens
Front:
On the front is the London Bridge in Dickens time, bustling
with activity, with Dickens inset in a corner oval, pondering
venerably. Next to him reads a quote from Tale of Two Cites:
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was
the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the
epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the
season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the
spring of hope, it was the winter of despair ....
Below reads a portion of his vitae: "Dickens wrote 15
novels and was the greatest master of characterization that
ever lived. Many of his characters still live today ~ Tiny
Tim, Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Wilkins Micawber, Oliver
Twist, and David Copperfield. Dickens attacked the serious
abuses of the times ~ the poor, the workhouse for children,
debtors' prisons, and the educational system ..."
Back:
On the back are five turn-of-the-century book drawings of:
Mr. Pickwick (on the ice), Tiny Tim, Wilkins Micawber, Sidney
Carton, and Oliver Twist ~ as well as the Title page and
illustrations from Dickens' unfinished novel, The Mystery
of Edwin Drood.
