Our greatest role model ~ for years his autobiography was
standard literature to teach boys growing up how to live wisely,
and forthrightly. Franklin's portrait, with lightning flashing
inside, is surrounded by the words: "scientist, citizen,
inventor, writer, soldier, diplomat, leader, statesman, printer,
essayist" To the right is his famous quote at the 1776
Declaration of Independence meeting, "Gentlemen, we must now
all hang together, or we shall most assuredly hang separately."
Back:
The back is a montage of the wisdom of Poor Richard's Almanac.
Five pictures portray Franklin and his inventions: the cover of
his first 1733 Almanac, bifocals (which he invented), the lightning
experiment, America's first political cartoon (published in the
Almanac), and his printing press. Quotes from the Almanac are:
"Many have quarrel'd about religion, that never practised it",
"a full belly makes a dull brain", "he that cannot obey cannot command",
"early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise",
"when the well is dry, we know the worth of water", "a word to the
wise is enough", and "God helps them that help themselves".
